Microsoft has announced that the new Windows 11 OS release will be available as a free update to licensed Windows 10 users. People buying PCs today will therefore be eligible for a free upgrade now that Windows 11 has launched. This release date for Windows 11 is mostly for new machines, with the update for existing Windows 10 users following after. So don’t be surprised if you still haven’t been offered the switch, it’s probably a good thing because this should mean any bugs and problems will be sorted by the time you can upgrade. Initially, Microsoft saidWindows 11 would be shifting to annual feature updates, but it’s since become clear that the OS will be getting new features throughout the year. Several new features have already been added since Windows 11’s launch, with more on the way soon.
Note the simplified ribbon along the top, which is far less busy and distracting than the previous File Explorer’s. The New button at the top left works for new folders or documents supported by your apps, and the same viewing options for files are available. The overflow menu offers file compression, selection, and Properties options, as well as the old Folder Options dialog.

Essentially, Microsoft has made it so that if an app you use isn’t in the Microsoft Store, it’s because the developer is just too lazy to submit it for listing. They no longer have to do any work on the development side to make their app “store-compliant,” as pretty much all Windows apps can now be listed. Microsoft is opening the floodgates and allowing developers to submit most Windows apps to the storefront now.
Microsoft plans to release Windows 11 to the general public by the holidays, so we can probably expect it sometime around late November. Before that, we’ll likely see a slew of public betas, starting next week.
